Jim Sarbh: Intro

Indian actor Jim Sarbh performs on stage and in movies. He is the winner of a Screen Award, an International Indian Film Academy Award, and two Filmfare Award nominations. He is most recognised for his supporting roles in Hindi movies. Sarbh has also directed and participated in a number of Indian theatre works.

In Ram Madhvani’s critically acclaimed and financially lucrative biographical drama Neerja, Sarbh made his feature film debut in 2016. For the part, he received favourable reviews from critics as well as recognitions like a nomination for a Screen Award and a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. Following his performance in the 2016 thriller A Death in the Gunj, he gained notoriety for his antagonist roles in the 2018 period drama Padmaavat and the 2018 biopic Sanju, both of which are among the highest-grossing Indian movies ever. He will be appearing in the TV series Rocket Boys in 2022 as Dr. Homi Bhabha.

In addition to his work in movies, Sarbh has frequently performed on stage, especially in Mumbai-based shows. His roles in the 2013 revivals of Death of a Salesman, Rajat Kapoor’s What’s Done is Done, and Kalki Koechlin’s Living Room have garnered praise. Bull, his first film as a director, was released in 2014.  Sarbh was included in Forbes India’s 30 Under 30 list in 2015 for his substantial work in the theatre.

Jim Sarbh was born on August 27, 1987, into a Parsi Zoroastrian household in Bombay, Maharashtra, India. His mother is a retired physical therapist, while his father is the regional director of P&O Ports South and Middle East Asia and a former master mariner. When Sarbh was three years old, his family emigrated from India to Australia. When he was eight years old, the family returned to Bombay, where he first attended the Bombay International School in South Mumbai before switching to the American School of Bombay in Bandra, West Mumbai. He earned his psychology undergraduate degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States. He is presently a Mumbai resident in Versova.

Sarbh spent a year as a literary intern with the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta following her graduation from Emory University. He appeared in plays such The Show!, The Breakup, Tennis in Nablus, and Ice Glen in Atlanta in 2009; the latter performance earned him a Major Supporting Role Metropolitan Atlanta Theatre Award. In 2012, Sarbh returned to Mumbai and started performing in regional theatre plays. Commentators were impressed with his portrayal of Happy Loman in Alyque Padamsee’s 2013 staging of Death of a Salesman.

Continued career in film (2017–present)

In 2017, Sarbh had two Bollywood releases: the suspenseful A Death in the Gunj and the love story Raabta. Additionally, he played the lead role in the independent film Ajeeb Ashiq, directed by Natasha Mendonca and centred on issues of gender identity and sexuality. The film was shown at numerous film festivals throughout Europe. He costarred with Shahid Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and Ranveer Singh in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2018 epic romance Padmaavat as Malik Kafur. He appeared in the Netflix movie House Arrest in 2019 and Yeh Ballet, another Netflix movie, in 2020.
