5 Allergies You May Not Be Aware Existed

Did you know that there are more than just the common allergies like pollen and dust? In fact, there are a number of things that people can be allergic to that you may not have even heard of before.

This blog post will discuss five of the most surprising allergies out there. If you suspect that you might be allergic to something but don’t know what it is, this post is for you!

  1. Coins

It’s a rare condition, but some people are actually allergic to coins. The metal in coins —specifically nickel— can cause an allergic reaction in some people, resulting in itching, redness, and swelling.

In severe cases, people can experience shortness of breath and difficulty swallowing. Coins aren’t the only source of nickel exposure, but they’re certainly one of the most common. Other common sources include jewelry, buttons, zippers, and belt buckles.

Nickel allergy is more common in women than men, and it often develops after repeated exposure to nickel-containing products. So if you find yourself developing a strange rash after handling money, it’s possible that you may be allergic to coins.

  1. Cannabis

While cannabis has been shown to have some potentially therapeutic effects, it’s also known to cause allergies in some people. If that’s surprising to you, then make sure to visit Veriheal to learn more about cannabis allergies, and anything else cannabis-related that might pique your interest.

The most common symptoms of cannabis allergies include itchiness, runny nose, and watery eyes. In severe cases, people may also experience difficulty breathing, swelling of the face and throat, and even anaphylaxis if the cannabis is consumed.

So why are some people allergic to cannabis? It turns out that the culprit is most likely cross-reactivity. So basically, if you’re already allergic to other plants with similar allergen properties to cannabis, it’s likely that you will also be allergic to cannabis, and vice versa.

  1. Sunlight

Ah, the sun. That big yellow ball of gas that gives us life… and allergies. Yes, believe it or not, some people are allergic to sunlight. A condition known as solar urticaria, this allergy manifests as hives or welts on the skin after exposure to sunlight.

The reaction is caused by the release of histamine, and it can be quite painful. In severe cases, the welts can even swell up and form blisters. So what can you do if you’re allergic to sunlight? Well, there are a few options. You can try wearing loose clothing that covers your skin, using sunscreen, or avoiding sun exposure altogether.

  1. Water

You might think that the idea of being allergic to water is absurd. After all, water is essential for life, so how could it possibly be harmful? Well, it turns out that some people are actually allergic to water. This condition, known as aquagenic urticaria, is very rare, affecting only about one in every 230 million people.

The exact cause of the allergy is not known, however, all allergic reactions are simply the immune system’s response to an external threat. Why some immune systems react to water in this way may never be known, but luckily it’s pretty easy to treat with antihistamines, and the hives go away within 15-20 minutes.

  1. Human touch

Some people are allergic to human touch. This may sound like a made-up condition, but it’s actually a real thing. And it’s not as rare as you might think, as it affects around four percent of the population.

It’s most often a lifelong condition which is manageable —as long as you can keep your skin covered. This particular allergy is known as “dermographism,” which is a form of urticaria. When the allergic person comes into contact with human skin, their bodies release histamine, which causes redness and swelling most commonly referred to as hives.

The word dermographism literally means “skin writing.” So if you have this condition, you would be able to write on your skin using your fingertip, and it would disappear on its own within about fifteen minutes.

Conclusion

While allergies are often thought of as a nuisance, they can actually be quite serious. If you think you may have an allergy, it’s important to see a doctor so that you can get proper treatment. Allergies are nothing to sneeze at!
